The British Army had adopted the Rifle, No. It was a simplified version of the Short, Magazine, Lee-Enfield rifle that served the Empire so well in the first unpleasantness. It was a further simplification and cut down on both material costs and machine time in its construction, much as the No. With its heavier, free-floated, In many ways, parallels can be drawn between the U.
“Strangers in the Night” is a song credited to Bert Kaempfert with English lyrics by Charles Singleton and Eddie Snyder. Kaempfert originally used it under the title “Beddy Bye” as part of the instrumental score for the movie A Man Could Get song was made famous in by Frank Sinatra, although it was initially given to Melina Mercouri, who thought that a man’s vocals would suit.
Since World War 1, the British Army appreciated its large caliber revolvers mainly due to their inherent man-stopping abilities when firing the large. However, such a large and powerful cartridge required an equally large and powerful and therefore heavy design which meant that such weapons proved cumbersome in the field and suffered in accuracy due to inherent recoil forces.
This prompted a British Army review to begin in the s in which it was decided to standardize on a more compact revolver model of. The cartridge in question was deemed to have the required stopping power while the frame proved easier to manage. The finalized product became the “Enfield No. Unlike other powers of the day, many of whom moved to adoption of semi-automatic repeating pistols, the British Army elected to stay the course with revolvers for the near future.
Such weapons were highly robust and utterly reliable under the worst of battlefield conditions and, to a lesser degree, they upheld long-standing British Army tradition of going into battle with a trusty revolver. This accounts for the decision to develop a new revolver during the period, though one of smaller caliber requiring far less training to master. The 5-inch long barrel was forged as part of the forward section of frame and sported a unique slab-sided look with a noticeably large forward sight fitted over the muzzle.
The revolving cylinder offered firing of six. A lanyard ring was fitted to a post under the grip to affixed the weapon to a belt or similar. Early production forms featured an exposed hammer spur while a follow-up form introduced a “spur-less” hammer intended reduce snagging on clothing and the like.

There are a number of methods by which a rifle can be dated, or at least bracketed between certain years of manufacture. For the latter, dates of introduction of military arms can be located within the Government “List of Changes” LoCs as can dates of obsolescence and of modification or upgrade to later marks. You may not necessarily find specific date information within the text of particular pages, but often the images of advertisements or catalogue entries contain some dating ‘give-away’, such as the year in which a particular rifle achieved a notable competition score by someone, but which data is in graphic format and therefore not “searchable” by a text search engine.
Do not briefly glance over a page and assume that the information you require is not there. It may not be immediately obvious, but careful observation may provide you with the information for which you are looking.
11th (Lonsdale Battalion) Border Regiment Cap Badge From the same family as the other example listed. This one appears to be in bronzed brass; I am quite sure this is a deliberate patination rather than a natural age-induced toning (compare the two badges side-by-side as illustrated).
Manuscript miscellanies were carefully compiled by hand, but also circulated, consumed, and sometimes added to in this organic state — they were a prominent feature of 16th and early 17th century literary culture. Printed miscellanies, which evolved in the late 17th and 18th centuries, were compiled by editors and published by booksellers in order to make a profit. While manuscript miscellanies were produced by a small coterie of writers, and so were constructed around their own personal tastes, printed miscellanies were increasingly aimed towards a popular audience, and bear the marks of commercially driven, money making, opportunistic endeavours.
However, the formal production of literary miscellanies came into its established form in the 16th and 17th centuries, and reached a highpoint in the 18th century. Although literary miscellanies would often contain critical essays and extracts of prose or drama, their main focus was popular verse , often including songs. At this time poetry was still a dominant literary form, for both low and high literature, and its variety and accessibility further suited it to miscellaneous publication.
A few examples are given here to illustrate the range of material typically found. The 9th-century Irish Book of Armagh is also mostly in Latin but includes some of the earliest surviving Old Irish writing, as well as several texts on Saint Patrick , significant sections of the New Testament , and a 4th-century saint’s Life. It is famous for the only text of Beowulf but also includes a life of Saint Christopher , Wonders of the East a description of various far-off lands and their fantastic inhabitants , a translation of a Letter of Alexander to Aristotle, and the poem Judith based on the Old Testament Book of Judith.
The Lacnunga is a 10th or 11th century miscellany in Old English, Latin and Old Irish, with health-related texts taking a wide range of approaches, from herbal medicine and other medical procedures, to prayers and charms.

Remington and Winchester were both contracted to manufacture the Pattern 14 or P In order to get rifles into the hands of US troops in the most expeditious manner possible the. The decision was made to convert the Pattern 14 British rifle rather than re-tool the plant to manufacture the standard issue US design. The redesigned Enfield rifle was designated the U. Within a matter of weeks Poland was defeated. Although Great Britain and France had declared war on Germany neither country was capable of immediately mounting any type of effective offensive against the fast moving German Wehrmacht.
After declaring war Great Britain once again found herself in a dire situation, facing a German invasion of her homeland and desperately in need of small arms to defend it. In they again turned to the industrial might of the United States, this time to manufacture the British designed, bolt action Enfield No. Stevens Company was selected to manufacture the weapon.

Bring some kind of bore light if you have one. Check to see if all of the major components are from the same maker, and have matching serial numbers. Try to find out if the rifle has been checked for headspace and passes.

Site Map Due to U. K legislation, we cannot and do not post deactivated weapons outside of the United Kingdom. Points on the terms ‘Old’ and ‘New’ Specification Deactivation. Old specification refers to weapons which have been deactivated before October whilst weapons deactivated after October are known as new specification deactivated weapons. Old specification deactivation rules permitted submachine guns and semi automatic rifles to have working actions able to be fully stripped down to their major component parts.
Revolvers were permitted to have unblocked cylinders enabling inert ammunition to be put into the cylinder but under the new specification rules this was no longer permitted. New specification rules now legally oblige that submachine guns and semi automatic rifles have all their actions cut and welded to the weapon body prohibiting cocking or dry firing.
Cocking handles and levers may be left free running in their groves. Change in law on deactivated firearms came into force on 8 April , see the below link for the current situation. On Tuesday 2nd May a penalty is introduced for anyone breaking the deactivation law which came into force on the 8th April From that date on it will only be legal to offer deactivated weapons which have a valid EU-UK deactivation certificate.
However, much has happened since it went up, including the Blogger outage. Scroll down for a report on that. More new posts will be added below this one.

Capt Quahog , 6: The thing went through FTR in year Bought this from a chum in Massachusetts about years ago. He bought the rifle while it was packed in cosmoline and wrapped within the brown paper stuff. When I got it from him the barrel and much of it was still filled with sticky grease goop. Since I’ve never shot the rifle, it is quite likely that it has not been fired since being overhauled years ago. Probably should have sold it when the market was better.
At least here in the northeast, if there is any real interest in Lee Enfield rifles it looks to be past.

I was looking at a Lee Enfield no5 Jungle Carbine, but someone put a peep sight on it If I was able to find an origional sight could I easily replace it myself and restore the rifle to the way it is supposed to be or would a gunsmith have to replace the sight for me?? I can’t seem to see how it goes on the rifle and how hard of a job it might be I sent my evil 10 round Number 4 down to NC with my friend but I have good pictures of it on my computer.
Are you sure the peep sights are not original? I thought all Enfields came with peep sights? Or is this one obviously aftermarket? No this is deff a after-market peep that was added, not an origional Enfield peep

Well it should have it stamped there! But again, a very stylised square S or the US flaming proof mark may well give it away. For particular example this particular rifle is manufactured in with the serial prefix BA 1XXXX, with a stylised M next to the date stamp. The trick to working out who made the rifle is to at this stage forget the alpha aspect and look at the first number, the 1.
It was made in the Royal Ordinance factory Maltby. Whereas the earlier models had a button cocking piece, however due to production date of this rifle the square piece is correct to the rifle, as was highlighted in the list of changes Para B
