Change It wasn’t trendy , funny, nor was it coined on Twitter , but we thought change told a real story about how our users defined Unlike in , change was no longer a campaign slogan.
But, the term still held a lot of weight. Here’s an excerpt from our Word of the Year announcement in The national debate can arguably be summarized by the question: In the past two years, has there been enough change? Has there been too much? Meanwhile, many Americans continue to face change in their homes, bank accounts and jobs. Only time will tell if the latest wave of change Americans voted for in the midterm elections will result in a negative or positive outcome.
Tergiversate This rare word was chosen to represent because it described so much of the world around us.

This was from a paper handed to me by a colleague who discovered it by chance several years ago. No author I’m afraid, but it is a fascinating read. In the attention of a number of public spirited citizens and capitalists of Springfield was called to the great advantage which would result to the city from the establishment and conduct of manufacturing industries.
Even in those days men who were what we now term promoters were keenly active in various lines, and one of the pioneers in this profession was Mr. He came to Springfield in and pointed out the benefits to the city, and the very possible and probable profits to be secured for the stockholders, of a company organised for the manufacture of watch movements. Attention was directed to the benefits which would come to the city in the establishment of an industry in which the chief expense of production was the high wages paid to skilled labor and in the bringing to the city of a large number of skilled mechanics and their families.
The Dollar Watch proved to be so popular that by mid s they had sold one million Dollar Pocket Watches. Ingersoll coined the phrase “The Watch that made the Dollar Famous!”. Other companies that also sold pocket watches costing only one dollar were Westclox, New Haven, Ingraham, and Ansonia.
Among the first companies to sell wristwatches, the Gruens split their manufacturing between two continents, exporting American technology to Germany and Switzerland, and bringing German and Swiss traditions of craftsmanship to America. Dietrich was born in Osthofen, Germany, in , and started his watchmaking career at age In he went to America and settled near Columbus, Ohio.
A hard-working young man, Dietrich was awarded his first watchmaking patent at age 27, in At 29 he co-founded the Columbus Watch Manufacturing Company; the successful enterprise was soon building complete watches in its own employee factory buildings. To graduate, Fred was given bars of metal from which he had to build working watch movements, designing and manufacturing all the parts. Initially, Dietrich and Fred designed the watch movements in America and manufactured them in Germany.
Later, they would build their own movement factory in Switzerland. Most Gruen watches have Gruen-made Swiss movements and were assembled and adjusted in the U. Pocket watches in the late s were large and heavy.

Antiquourm Lot in the March Auction: Zenith Alarm pocketwatch in sterling silver case attributed to Gandhi. I find no problem with the watch itself as presented. Before becoming famous for their high-beat automatic chronograph calibers in the later half of the Twentieth Century, Swiss maker Zenith was known for simpler, respectable, and reliable if perhaps somewhat unremarkable timepieces in the middling price and quality range.
A sterling silver-cased Zenith alarm pocketwatch indeed seems rather fitting for a lawyer-turned-visionary, originally purchased for its quality and practicality rather than ostentation. The condition seems to indicate it was then carried over much of the course of a lifetime, as might be expected for the humbly frugal man known for attention to punctuality. The watch seems consistent with historical depictions.
As reported by the Times of India , the Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi describes the watch as a gift of which Gandhi was quite fond from Indira Nehru , an additional provenance tidbit that would make the watch even more notable. It was a gift to me. It was a Zenith watch. Zenith-signed mechanical alarm movement. Note the sterling hallmark inside the caseback as well.
The Cabinet of Invisible Counselors

Long before I had ever written a line for publication, or endeavored to deliver a speech in public, I followed the habit of reshaping my own character, by trying to imitate the nine men whose lives and life-works had been most impressive to me. Just before going to sleep at night, I would shut my eyes, and see, in my imagination, this group of men seated with me around my Council Table. Here I had not only an opportunity to sit among those whom I considered to be great, but I actually dominated the group, by serving as the Chairman.
My purpose was to rebuild my own character so it would represent a composite of the characters of my imaginary counselors. Realizing, as I did, early in life, that I had to overcome the handicap of birth in an environment of ignorance and superstition, I deliberately assigned myself the task of voluntary rebirth through the method here described… In these imaginary Council meetings I called on my Cabinet members for the knowledge I wished each to contribute, addressing myself to each member in audible words, as follows: Emerson, I desire to acquire from you the marvelous understanding of Nature which distinguished your life.
I ask that you make an impress upon my subconscious mind, of whatever qualities you possessed, which enabled you to understand and adapt yourself to the laws of Nature. Also to acquire the spirit of enduring FAITH, which enabled you to turn defeat into victory, and to surmount staggering obstacles. His imaginary meetings became so vivid, in fact, that he discontinued them, so that he would not begin to confuse the workings of his head with reality.
But, Hill said, Lincoln then came to visit him in his sleep, and told him he had a great work to do and not to shirk the duty. I still regard my Cabinet meetings as being purely imaginary, but I feel entitled to suggest that, while the members of my Cabinet may be purely fictional, and the meetings existent only in my own imagination, they have led me into glorious paths of adventure, rekindled an appreciation of true greatness, encouraged creative endeavor, and emboldened the expression of honest thought.
The fact remains that human beings do receive accurate knowledge, through sources other than the physical senses. Such knowledge, generally, is received when the mind is under the influence of extraordinary stimulation.

Watches with Rolex’s “other brands” on their movements such as Marconi, Unicorn or RolCo, are often described as “Rolex watches”, but this is not what Rolex would have called them. There was often no secret that they were supplied by the Rolex Watch Company, but they were not called or branded Rolex watches, they were called Marconi, Unicorn or RolCo watches by Rolex themselves and if any name appears on the dial it should be the same as the one on the movement.

Rolex Datejust The story of the Rolex watch is inextricably entwined with the story of Hans Wilsdorf, who co-founded and personally drove forward the progress of the company, and the technical developments that led to the public acceptance and expectation of an accurate, waterproof, self winding wristwatch. Many other companies and individuals contributed, and there were waterproof and self winding watches before the Rolex Oyster, but the fact remains than Wilsdorf is an important figure in the story of the modern mechanical wristwatch.

Relative to the manner of translating the Book of Mormon the prophet himself has said but little. Of the Urim and Thummim he says: After describing the means the prophet employed to exclude the light from the “Seer Stone,” he says: A piece of something resembling parchment would appear, and under it was the interpretation in English. Brother Joseph would read off the English to Oliver Cowdery, who was his principal scribe, and when it was written down and repeated to Brother Joseph to see if it was correct, then it would disappear, and another character with the interpretation would appear.

The Watch that Made the Dollar Famous In about , Robert Hawley Ingersoll and his brother Charles Henry, operating in New York as a mail-order business, recognized the need for an inexpensive watch that nearly anyone could afford, to be sold for around one dollar. Both the New Haven Clock Company and the Waterbury Clock company had already produced inexpensive “clock-watches” that could meet the need that Ingersoll anticipated, but they had achieved neither mass-market success nor widespread distribution.
The positive response prompted Ingersoll to return to Chicago for the World’s Fair in , where a new clock-watch with the World’s Fair emblem stamped into the case was a huge success.
